History of Amalie Arena
Ground was broken on the stadium on April 14, 1994. Amalie Arena was completed two and a half years later on October 20, 1996. The location of the arena was the second choice they had chosen.Tampa Bay Lightning paid $53 million to construct the new stadium while the city of Tampa paid $86 million.
The first game held in the stadium was against the New York Rangers. The Lightning beat the Rangers 5-2.
On September 3, 2014 the owner of the Lightning announced that the stadium would be renamed Amalie Arena, named after an oil company in Tampa.
