History of Angels Stadium of Anaheim

Ground was broken on the stadium on August 31, 1964, a little less then two years later it was completed. The Angels rented the Dodgers stadium for four seasons up until their new stadium was finished.  During the process of building the stadium they spent much time figuring out the proper dimensions that would best suit the pitcher, hitter, and weather conditions.

In the 1970s, the Los Angeles Rams were looking for a new place to play. They wanted a stadium that was small enough where they wouldn’t have trouble filling the seats. Up until then several of their games had been blacked out on local television because the Coliseum, where they used to play, seated over 100,000 people and they couldn’t fill it. The owner of the Rams struck a deal with the stadium that would expand the stadium for football games, and include a roof to make it an enclosed stadium. Many Angels fans weren’t too happy with the renovations. Most of the seats had been pushed back from the field, making fans farther away from all the action.

The Northridge earthquake on January 17, 1994 caused the Jumbotron in the stadium to collapse on the upper deck. No injuries were caused, and a new jumbotron was installed shortly after.
