History of Arrowhead Stadium
In October of 1967, Charlie Finley, the owner of the Kansas City A’s was granted permission from Major League Baseball to move the team to Oakland, California. Kansas City was unable to find an area large enough to build a new stadium, so Jackson County stepped in and offered a location near Kansas City where they could build the stadium.
That same year a $102 million bond was passed to build a new sports complex with two stadiums, including a retractable roof that went between the two. That plan was quickly shut down because it was far too complicated and too expensive to follow through. Construction began on Arrowhead Stadium in 1968, and was completed in time for the 1972 season, where the Kansas City Chiefs played the St. Louis Cardinals. Renovations started in 2007 and were completed in time for the 2010 season.
