History of AT&T Center

The AT&T Center was completed in 2002 as the SBC Center at a final cost of $175 million. It was financed by county-issued bonds which were supported by a hotel-occupancy and car-rental tax increase and an additional contribution of $28.5 million from the San Antonio Spurs.

SBC Communications INC., purchased the naming rights to the arena on a 20-year, $41 million naming right agreement. In 2005, SBC Communications changed its name to AT&T Inc and the name of the stadium was changed as well and is called AT&T Center at the time of this post.

Before the completion of AT&T Center the Spurs played at the Alamodome. Since the Spurs were using the Alamodome for most of the year, making it difficult to schedule other events to be scheduled both parties became difficult to work with. Fans grew unhappy with the poor sight lines and the cavernous look and feel of the Alamodome.
