History of BMO Harris Bradley Center

The arena opened on October 1, 1988 with an exhibition hockey game between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Edmonton Oilers. The arena was built to be a modern-day replacement to The MECCA, which was built in 1950. bmo-bradley-center-scoreboardThe MECCA was the NBA’s smallest arena, holding just over 11,000 people!

The BMO Harris Bradley Center is now one of the oldest active NBA arenas. What’s unique about this arena is that funds to build it was a gift from a family (Bradley family) without any provision for the building’s long-term capital needs or annual operating expenses.

A new scoreboard was installed in 2010 with 3.5 million LED Pixels! It’s unique due to the bottom panel also being an LED screen allowing the display of many images above the floor.

In may of 2012, owner Herb Kohl announced that the BMO Harris Bank had officially purchased the naming rights for the Bradley Center
