History of Chesapeake Energy Arena
The arena opened on June 8, 2002 after three years of construction. It was originally names “Ford Center” from a naming rights deal with the Oklahoma Ford Dealers Group. The arena was actually constructed to minimum NBA and NHL specifications. It was built without the luxury amenities because of local concerns on running expenditures without having a local major-league tenant.
A “buildout” was planned in 2007 with the rising talks of relocating the Seattle Supersonics to Oklahoma City. Once passed, the city placed one-cent sales tax for a period of fifteen months in order to fund $121 million in budgeted improvements to the arena, as well as, a separate practice facility for a relocated franchise.
The deal to move the Sonics to Oklahoma City was approved by the NBA on April 18, 2008. The deal included a provision for $1.6 million in annual rents to the City for use of the Ford Center, and a $409,000 annual supplemental payment in exchange for a transfer of arena naming rights and associated revenue to the Sonics franchise
The Chesapeake Energy Arena is now one of the oldest active NBA arenas. What’s unique about this arena is that funds to build it was a gift from a family (Bradley family) without any provision for the building’s long-term capital needs or annual operating expenses.
On July 22, 2011 a twelve-year naming rights agreement was announced between the Thunder and Chesapeake Energy Corporation to rename the arena to Chesapeake Energy Arena. The initial annual cost of $3 million with a 3% annual escalation was the cost to do so.
