History of Citi Field
Ground was broken on the stadium on November 13, 2006. Citi Field was completed roughly two and a half years later. The Mets had been looking to replace Shea Stadium ever since the Jets left. Even though the stadium was retrofitted for baseball, it still wasn’t optimal for baseball games.
In 2001 right before mayor Giuliana was going to leave the office, he announced tentative agreements that both the Mets and the Yankees would be able to build new stadiums. The cost for both would be roughly $1.5 billion, taxpayers would pick up half the tab. When Michael Bloomberg was elected mayor, shortly after he backed out of both deals to build new stadiums, stating that part of the contract said it was okay for him to back out. He believed investing in new stadiums was a poor idea, and that if either team wanted a new stadium they would have to fund it on their own. He would however offer some money for improvements on both stadiums.
Final plans for Citi Field were created as part of the 2012 Olympic bid. Plans for a West Side Stadium fell through, solidyfing plans for Citi Field. The cost of the stadium was $610 million, the Mets picked up $420 million of the cost. Part of the deal was that the Mets couldn’t leave New York for 40 years.
