History of Dodger Stadium
Ground was broken on the stadium on September 17, 1959 and completed almost three years later. In the late 1950s the Brooklyn Dodgers president tried to build a stadium in New York City but was unable to come to an agreement on land, and eventually struck a deal in Los Angeles. While the stadium was under construction the Dodgers played in their temporary home, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, which seated roughly 90,000 people.
Dodger Stadium was the first since Yankee Stadium that was built 100% through private financing. An elementary school was knocked down right next to the stadium so they could put in a large parking lot. Dodger Stadium was home to the Angels from 1962-1965 while their new stadium was being built.
As of 2014 Dodger Stadium is one of ten parks that doesn’t have a corporate-sponsored name.
