History of The FirstEnergy Stadium

Ground was broken for the stadium on May 15, 1997, and was opened a little over two years later. On September 12, 1999 the first Browns game was held against the Pittsburgh Steelers. FirstEnergy Stadium sits exactly where Cleveland Municipal Stadium used to be. After the Browns former coach, Art Modell moved to Baltimore to coach the Ravens, the National Football League allowed the city of Cleveland to tear down the old stadium and build a new one to keep the Browns in the league.

As of 2014, including super bowl games, FirstEnergy Stadium is the only stadium to not host a playoff game. Both high school and college football games have been hosted at the stadium along with a couple soccer games.

The city chose not to sell naming rights to the stadium, but instead sold them to each of the facility’s four entrance gates. The gates were originally named for National City Bank, Steris Corp., CoreComm Inc., and the Cleveland Clinic Sports Health. In August of 2012 naming rights were sold to Jimmy Haslam, but before the deal was official Haslam announced that he had sold the rights to someone else. In January of 2013 it was reported that naming rights were sold to FirstEnergy Corporation.
