History of Ford Field
Ground was broken for the stadium on November 16, 1999, and was completed a little less then three years later. Ford Motor Company purchased the naming rights for 20 years, costing them $40 million. The stadium cost roughly $430 million, which was financed through the sale of the naming rights, along with public and private funds.
Ford Field is only one of ten venues in the NFL that’s end zones are in the east and west. The NFL has ruled against this type of construction because it causes the sun to be in the player’s eyes while playing. The only reason they were able to build the stadium was because the sunlight never actually hits the field.
