History of Great American Ball Park
Ground was broken on the stadium on August 1, 2000. Great American Ball Park was completed two and a half years later on March 31, 2003. Back in 1996 a one half percent sales tax increase was passed to fund construction for new stadiums for both the Reds and the Bengals of the NFL. Before now, they had both shared Cinergy Field. Both teams complained that the stadium lacked amenities for both sports to compete.
Great American Ball Park was built inbetween US Bank Arena and Cinergy Field, which ultimately gave the stadium it’s nickname of “wedge”. Cinergy Field was demolished two years later in December.
