History of Heinz Field

Both the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Pittsburgh Steelers shared the Three Rivers Stadium from 1970-2000. A proposal was made to renovate the stadium after the Pittsburgh Pirates started discussing building a new baseball park. The team’s ownership didn’t like that idea because they wanted to build a new stadium as well, believing that would help sign new players.

In June of 2001 H. J. Heinz Company bought the naming rights to the new stadium. Ground was broken for Heinz Field on June 18, 1999. The first event held at the stadium was a concert hosted by ‘N Sync on August 18, 2001. The first NFL game was held a few days later on the 25th against the Detroit Lions.
