History of Kauffman Stadium

Ground was broken on the stadium on July 11, 1968. Kauffman Stadium was completed almost five years later on April 10, 1973. Back in 1967 Jackson County, Missouri passed bonds for Truman Sports Complex, which would include a new stadium for the Kansas City Athletics along with the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL. Back then it wasn’t common for NFL and MLB teams to have seperate teams. Before 1968, the Athletics moved to Oakland, California and the people in Kansas City wanted to revoke the new baseball stadium unless they brought in a new MLB team. They were planning on waiting to bring a new team to Kansas City in 1971, but they didn’t want to wait three years for a new team. The Kansas City Royals played four seasons at Kansas City Municipal Stadium until the new stadium was completed in April of 1973.

In 1973 Nolan Ryan, a pitcher for the California Angels, threw his first no-hitter at Kauffman Stadium. In 1976 the Royals played their first post-season game in franchise history. In 1980 the first World Series game was held in Kansas City. In 1985 the Royals clinched their first World Series title, winning games seven in Royals Stadium.

After the 2007 season, the Royals placed an all red seat behind home plate in honor of Buck O’Neill. Each game they select a fan from the community who embodies the spirit of Buck O’Neill.
