History of Marlins Park
Ground was broken on the stadium on Jul 1, 2009. Marlins Park was completed almost three years later. Before the stadium was built the Marlins played at Sun Life Stadium, which was home to the Miami Dolphins. The stadium was originally built for football, but during construction the Dolphins founder believed a baseball team would come to South Florida one day, so he made renovations that would make it easy for a baseball team to start playing at the stadium. Even though the stadium was built to accommodate both football and baseball, as the years went on it became more and more noticeable that it was created more for football.
After the owner of the Marlins sold the team to John W. Henry in 1999 he became pretty adamant about building a new baseball stadium for the Marlins. Shortly after the year 2000 Henry left to own the Boston Red Sox, while the Expos owner Jeffrey Loria took on the Marlins. Loria also wanted to build a new stadium for the team. In 2004, they proposed building a stadium solely built for baseball, where the Miami Orange Bowl had been.
