History of The Mercedes-Benz Superdome

Ground was broken for the stadium on August 12, 1971. Because of the size and destination of the stadium it has become a major tourist destination in the United States. The Superdome is often a candidate for major sporting events such as the Final Four, the Super Bowl, and College Football Championship Games.

In 2005, following Hurricane Katrina the Mercedes-Benz dome housed thousands of people seeking shelter. Due to the Hurricane the dome was shut down for a while to fix all damages. It wasn’t until October 3, 2011 that Mercedes-Benz purchased naming rights for the stadium. Before that the dome was known as the Louisiana Superdome.
