History of Minute Maid Park

Ground was broken on the stadium on November 1, 1997. Minute Maid Park was completed roughly two years later. In 1995 the Astros owner made it very clear that he wasn’t in the market to build a new ballpark. LAter that year the NFL franchise in Houston announced that they were leaving to Tennessee so a new stadium could be built for their team there. A year later John J. Moores wanted to own the next NFL franchise in Houston. In doing so he wanted to build a football-only stadium and a brand new baseball-only stadium. They agreed on $250 million USD funded by the county to build the new baseball stadium, any extra money used would be funded by the Astros.

The stadium was originally named “Enron Field” in 20000 when naming rights were sold to the energy and financial trading company for a $100 million deal for 30 years. Roughly a year later the company went bankrupt, and Astros management faced public relations nightmares. About a year later they renamed the park “Minute Maid Park” after being sold to Minute Maid for $100 million for another 30 years. The stadium has a nickname of “The Juice Box” due to the left-field dimension. Before switching names of the stadium it held both nicknames of “Ten-Run” and “Home Run” field.
