History of Nationals Park
Ground was broken on the stadium on May 4, 2006. Nationals Park was completed a little less then two years later. Financing for the field was to be covered by Deutsche Bank. The deal was stalled due to negotiation issues between the city government, MLB as the owner of the team, and the bank. Eventually the situation was solved and construction began. The site for the stadium was chosen by mayor Anthony Williams. He had to choose between four possible locations.
Pope Benedict XVI attended Mass at the stadium on April 17, 2008 which had a crowd of roughly 47,000.
