History of Oriole Park at Camden Yards
Ground was broken on the stadium on June 28, 1989. Oriole Park was completed almost three years later on April 6, 1992. In 1984 the Baltimore Colts moved to Indianapolis, because Baltimore refused to spend any money to replace Memorial Stadium. Afraid that they would lose the Orioles as well, city and state officials immediately started building a new park to keep the Orioles around.
Former Orioles owner wanted to name the new stadium Oriole Park, while the Governor of Maryland wanted to name the stadium Camden Yards. Eventually they came to a compromise and named it both.
