History of Petco Park
Ground was broken on the stadium on May 3, 2000. Petco Park was completed almost four years later. The stadium was originally supposed to be finished in time for the 2002 season, but due to legal and political reasons construction was put on hold. During the 2002 and 2003 regular season, the Padres played at the Qualcomm Stadium.
The first game ever played at the Park was during an invitational NCAA tournament. The San Diego State Aztecs defeated Houston. In the history of college baseball, that game still holds the record for most fans in attendance. On April 8, 2004 the Padres played their first game in the stadium against the San Francisco Giants, they won 4-3 in 10 innings. Petco Parks first concert wasn’t held until the next year, on November 11, 2005 when The Rolling Stones performed.
Since then many memorable moments have happened. Their first rainout a couple years later, Barry Bonds hit his 755th home run, a 22-inning games against the Padres and the Rockies, Madonna performed, a game was delayed due to a swarm of bees, and a 5.7 earthquake struck during a Blue Jays-Padres game.
