History of Philips Arena
Philips Arena sits on the same ground that once held The Omni. Ted Turner, owner of the Hawks(at the time) wanted to bring the NHL back to the city of Atlanta who once had the viewing pleasure of the Atlanta Thrashers, but had moved up north to Calgary in 1980. The Omni was deemed unsuitable for a new team of any kind and in came Philips Arena.
The first event held at the arena was a concert put on my Sir Elton John in September of 1999. It is among the busiest arenas in the world, having sold well over 550,00 concert tickets in 2007 alone. In 2003 Philips Arena was home to the NBA All-Star game.
The Dutch Royal Philips Electronics purchased the naming rights to the arena upon completion of construction.
