History of Qualcomm Stadium
Jack Murphy, a local sportswriter, in the 1960s started gaining support for a multipurpose stadium in the San Diego area. In 1965 a $27 million bond was passed for construction of a new stadium. Construction began about a month later. At first the stadium was named San Diego Stadium.
The Chargers played the first game in the stadium on August 20, 1967. They were the main tenant of the stadium until the next year when the San Diego Padres baseball team played their season in the stadium. After Jack Murphy died they renamed the stadium as San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.
In 1997, the enclosed the stadium, with one exception of where the scoreboard was located. Also in that year Qualcomm Corporation paid $18 million to have the stadium named after them. In honor of Jack Murphy they named the field Jack Murphy field, but because of the naming agreement with Qualcomm, Jack Murphy Field was not allowed. However, many people still refer to the stadium as “Jack Murphy” or “The Murph”.
