History of Safeco Field
Ground was broken on the stadium on March 8, 1997. Safeco Field was completed a little over two years later. In 1994 Gary Locke created a task force to assess the need of building a new stadium to replace Safeco Field. Many people feared that if a new stadium wasn’t built the Mariners would leave Seattle. The task force decided that a.01% sales tax increase would be plenty to fund a new stadium. When time came to vote for the new tax increase, it was barely defeated. A month later the state legislature authorized a different package deal to fund the stadium. In this deal it included a car rental surcharge, a ballpark admissions tax, a food and beverage tax in restaurants and bars, a credit against the state sales tax, and new stadium license plates they would sale. The package was approved and about a year later construction began.
Safeco insurnace purchased naming rights for $40 millions for the first 20 years. Although, the acquisition of the Safeco company by Liberty Mutual Group may incur a change to the stadium before the 20 years are up.
