Ground was broken on the stadium on June 28, 1990. SAP Center at San Jose was completed a little over three years later on September 7, 1993. Shortly after construction began it was put on hold because the the Sharks requested an upgrade to NHL standards that would include a press box, luxury suites, and more seating.
A German software company named SAP purchased naming rights back in June of 2013 for a five year $3.5 million deal. In 2001 naming rights were sold to Compaq, and in 2002 the stadium was purchased by HP giving it the name of HP Pavilion.
