History of Sleep Train Arena
Sleep Train Arena was originally called the ARCO Arena from 1985 – 1988. The Kings played their home games here after moving from Kansas City. It’s located in a once isolated area on the expanding norther outskirts of the city. Being constructed for just $40 million, it comes in as the lowest (cost of construction) facility in the NBA. It’s also the smallest facility in the NBA as far as seating capacity.
In 2006, a campaign to build a new $600 million arena was turned down by the public. It has also hosted many WWE events in the past and currently hosts several high school basketball championship games throughout the area.
In February 2011, ARCO’s sponsorship agreement ran out and was picked up by Power Balance which renamed the venue to Power Balance Pavilion. That only lasted a little over a year when Sleep Train purchased the naming rights to the venue. The Kings will stay in this arena until 2016, when the downtown Sacramento arena opens up.
