History of Staples Center
Construction on the Staples Center broke ground in 1998 and the center was opened a year later. The $375 million cost to build was financed privately, and named Staples Center after the office company Staples, Inc., purchased the naming rights.
The center opened with a Bruce Springsteen & The E Street band concert, and since then has hosted seven NBA finals series all being with the Los Angeles Lakers, three WNBA finals, the 2000 Democratic National Convention, the 2002 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, and a Stanley Cup Finals of the NHL in 2012. There have been many popular concerts here in the Staples Center, too many to name but you can read about them here.
Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers scored a career-high 81 points in the Staples Center on January 22, 2006 – the second highest points scored in an NBA game in history. In 2012 the Kings, Lakers, and Clippers all reached the post-season, making it the first time the arena hosted three playoff teams.
In February 2013, PETA named Staples Center as the most “vegetarian-friendly” arena in the NBA.
