History of The Sun Life Stadium
Joe Robbie, the founder of the Miami Dolphins began campaigning to build a new home for his team. He believed that it was only a matter of time that a MLB team came to South Florida. Per his request a new stadium was built so very little renovations would be necessary to make it usable for baseball. The field was made a little wider then most NFL fields, making it easier to convert the stadium for soccer.
Wayne Huizenga, in 1990 purchased 50 percent of the stadium and is one of the main reasons a MLB team came to Southern Florida. In 1994 Huizenga purchased the remaining 50 percent, and then spent several million dollars to upgrade and renovate the stadium.
Sun Life Stadium is not only home to the Miami Dolphins, and prior home to the Miami Marlins, it’s also hosted both college and high school football games, wrestling tournaments, soccer, monster truck shows, and several different concerts.
