History of TD Garden
Boston Garden owner Delaware North was awarded the rights to build a new arena by the Boston Redevelopment Authority and Mayor Raymond Flynn in 1985. With poor economic conditions, the project was delayed until 1992.
In 1992, Delaware North announced that the Bank of Boston, Fleet Bank of Massachusetts, and Shawmut National Corporation provided the money in the form of $120 million. A December bill by the Massachusetts Senate wasn’t approved for construction, and it wasn’t until February 1993 when both sides came to an agreement to get the project rolling for construction.
The plans showed that the new arena would be built slightly north of the old facility, “slightly” meaning just nine inches of space between the two buildings once construction was complete.
On March 3, 2005, Maine-based TD Banknorth announced an agreement to purchase the naming rights for $6 million per year. The company changed the name of the arena to TD Banknorth Garden on July 1, 2005. It wasn’t until 2009 when the arena became known as TD Garden.
