History of Toyota Center
On November 8, 2000 after years of failed negotiations between the Houston Rockets and legal entities, an agreement was finally reached for the build-out of a new arena. According to the agreement, the city of Houston purchased the land and adjoining parking garage for the arena, and paid for it by selling bonds and borrowing $30 million.
A neat feature of the Toyota Center is that it was built 32 feet below street level as so that fans did not have to walk up stairs to reach their seats. In order to achieve this, 31,500 cubic yards of dirt was removed over a period of four months. This was the largest excavation project in Houston history.
In July of 2003, the arena was named the Toyota Center after Toyota agreed to pay $100 million for naming rights, which was the fourth largest deal for a sports arena in the United States at the time.
