History of Tropicana Field

Ground was broken on the stadium on November 22, 1986. Tropicana Field was completed a little over three years later on March 3, 1990. After Tampa had gotten the Buccaneers and the Rowdies they were determined to bring an Major League Baseball team in as well. Proposals for a baseball stadium were designed back in 1983. For a while they almost got the Chicago White Sox to move to Tampa, if Chicago didn’t build a new stadium for them. Ultimately they did build a new stadium for the team in Chicago.

The stadium was completed in 1990, but they still had no team to play there. It took five more years before Tampa was able to get a baseball team. At this time changes were made to bot the stadium and the stadiums name. Naming rights were sold to Tropicana Products, renaming the stadium Tropicana Field. Even though Tropicana was purchased by Pepsi, Pepsi has made no intention of renaming the stadium.
